Sehwag named Cricketer of the Year!

Back to Glory.
India's cricket chiefs on Monday named swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag the country's player of the year for 2007-2008.
Sehwag, 30, will receive the Polly Umrigar award, named after a former India captain, at a function organised by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in Mumbai on February 18.
Sehwag dominated Indian batting since his return to the Test side on the 2007-08 tour of Australia after being overlooked for the away series against Bangladesh and England and the home matches against Pakistan.
In 2008, the opening batsman scored 1,462 runs in 14 Tests at an average of 56.23, including a blistering triple-century against South Africa in Chennai. Sehwag was also part of India's World Cup-winning Twenty20 squad in South Africa in September, 2007.
Cheteshwar Pujara, a 21-year-old from Saurashtra, was named the best batsman in domestic cricket for scoring 807 runs at an average of 73.36 runs in the country's premier first-class tournament for the Ranji Trophy.
Uttar Pradesh seamer Sudeep Tyagi, who picked up 41 wickets at 21.63 in the Ranji Trophy, was named the best bowler in domestic cricket. Former Test batsman Gundappa Viswanath will receive the C.K. Nayudu award, named after the legendary India captain, for his lifetime contribution to the game.
The stylish middle-order batsman, who scored a Test century on debut against Australia in 1969, has served as India's chairman of selectors in the past.
India stars Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Harbhajan Singh, recipients of the country's fourth-highest civilian awards, the Padma Shri, last month, will also receive special awards from the BCCI.
Dhoni led India to victory in the World Twenty20 championships, while Harbhajan surpassed 300 wickets during the home series against Australia last October-November.

First Look: The LG Arena Smartphone

Loaded with S-Class 3D Interface.
LG has unveiled its latest Smartphone, the Arena, or KM900 as it's also known as and its set to be LG's flagship handset for 2009.
Although we'll have to wait until the Mobile World Congress kicks off for the full spec, the press release does at least reveal some of the handsets features.
The Arena will have a new 3D GUI which is LG refers to as the 3D S-Class UI and the company claims that it "was specifically designed to be a more fun and engaging gateway to an amazing multimedia environment".
However, we'll hold our judgement until we see it action, but we're not sure if the cube based layout is as easy to use as LG is suggesting.
However, we can only agree with the fact that the "S-Class UI will be unlike anything that has appeared on a mobile phone before", be it good or bad.
However, the Arena is not just about its UI, as it also has a range of appealing software and hardware features such as Dobly audio, DivX playback, 7.2Mbit HSDPA, WiFi and aGPS. Sadly, not much else has been revealed so far, so we'll just have to wait a bit longer for the full details.

Sachin, Ganguly and Abdul Kalam were to be Assassinated

Chilling Disclosure. Islami (HuJI) terrorists, accused of plotting to kidnap cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Saurav Ganguly, had also attempted to assassinate A P J Abdul Kalam during his visit to Patna in 2001, the prosecution told a Delhi court on Monday.
"They (terrorists) also tried to assassinate A P J Abdul Kalam (the then scientific adviser to the defense ministry), when he visited Patna, but their plan could not succeed due to lack of logistic support there," public prosecutor Anita Hooda submitted before Additional Sessions Judge Pinki.
The chilling disclosure was made by Tariq Mohammed, a Pakistan-based HuJI militant, during his custodial interrogation, the prosecutor said while continuing with final arguments on the third day.
The arrested HuJI men were working at the instructions of their Pakistan-based masters, Asif Raza Khan, Umar Sheikh and Azam Cheema, she said.
"The leaders wanted them to abduct Sachin Tendulkar for ransom to raise funds for their terrorist activities. They also wanted to kidnap Saurav for the purpose of securing the release of their two men lodged in jails," the prosecutor, while referring to the chargesheet, submitted.
Besides attempting to kill Kalam, the accused also had a plan to "carry out explosions" at Bhaba Atomic Research Centre, Trombay, the prosecutor said. The terrorist acts were planned to secure the release of HUJI militants Asrullah Lagrial and Abdul Rahim, lodged in Jodhpur and Tihar jail, respectively, the prosecutor said.
Narrating the sequence of events, the prosecutor said the police on January 31, 2002 arrested the mastermind Jalaluddin, a Bangladesh national, from Nizamuddin Railway station. Jalaluddin, who later escaped and was declared a proclaimed offender, had led to the arrest of co-accused, besides divulging the conspiracy to execute a series of terror attacks, she said.
The advancing of final arguments remained inconclusive and would continue on February 19. Earlier, the prosecutor had claimed that the terrorist outfit was formed by Pakistan national Maulana Masood Azhar, a terrorist who was freed by India in exchange of passengers of hijacked Indian Airlines aircraft IC-814.
All the accused, who were arrested in January, February and March in 2002, have been booked under various provisions of the POTA, the IPC and the Explosives Act, carrying a maximum sentence of the death penalty.
They are charged with hatching conspiracy to wage a war against the state and keeping explosives. Besides three Pakistan-based accused, Tariq Mohammed, Ashfaq Ahmed and Ashad Khan, the others are — Mufti Israr, Ghulam Qadir Bhatt and Ghulam Mohd Dar.

FBI officer Sexually Assaulted 26/11 Suspect

Faheen Ans
The probe into the November 26 Mumbai terror attack took an unusual twist with one of the accused, Faheem Ansari, levelling sexual harassment allegations against a woman officer of America's Federal Bureau of Investigation.
An FBI team is conducting an independent probe into the attacks. Faheem has moved the court with his lawyer Ejaz Naqvi filing an application before an Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate alleging that a woman FBI officer, who had interrogated the accused, had "sexually harrassed him all through the night."
The court issued a notice on Monday to the city police's crime branch and directed it to file their reply to the application by February 26. The application also made a plea for Faheem to be sent for medical check-up as he has developed "itches and wounds in his private parts and all over his body".
"Faheem had been interrogated by three FBI officers out of which one of them, a woman officer, had sexually abused him," Naqvi told the court.
Faheem had earlier filed an application seeking action against the city police for allegedly allowing the FBI to interrogate him. The Crime Branch will have to file their reply on whether any foreign investigating agencies like the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had been allowed to interrogate the accused in the November 26 terror attacks case.
"According to Indian law, no foreign agency can be allowed to interrogate an Indian suspect and we have sought relief from the court," Naqvi said.
Faheem and his associate Sabauddin Ahmed, are in the custody of the Crime Branch till February 17. The Crime Branch is investigating whether the duo was responsible for providing data regarding locations targeted by terrorists during the November 26 attacks.
Ansari and Sabauddin were arrested last year in connection with the 2007 New Year eve attack on a CRPF camp in Rampur in Uttar Pradesh. The lone terrorist, Mohammed Ajmal Amir Kasab, arrested in the November 26 terror strikes is also presently in police custody till February 13.ari reveals.
